The Regency period in British history refers to the years between 1811 and 1820, when George, Prince of Wales, ruled as Prince Regent due to his father George III’s mental illness. While the political Regency officially lasted for those nine years, the term “Regency” is often used more broadly to encompass the period from roughly 1795 to 1837, including the reigns of George III, George IV, and William IV, according to some historical and cultural definitions.
