Object History

Joseph Thors (British, 1835–1920) was a Dutch-born British painter best known for his landscape paintings of the English countryside. His airy, idealized works can be compared to those of Dutch Golden Age painters, such as Meindert Hobbema and Jacob Van Ruisdael, for their quick brushwork and dramatic sense of light. Inspired by pastoral imagery, the artist often highlighted the serenity of the countryside through images of farmhouses, quiet streams, and winding paths. For example, in his painting Farmyard he communicates a sense of simplicity and happiness, depicting a small house with a windmill on top of a bright, sunny hill. Born circa 1835 in Amsterdam, Netherlands, little is known about Thors’ life before he moved to London sometime after 1860. Joseph Thors lived at 12 Great Russell St. In London, but often chose to paint in the Midlands. He favoured the Norwich School style of painting and so his favoured subjects tended to be rustic cottages, winding paths and hidden homesteads. By the late 1860s, he was exhibiting work predominantly at Suffolk Street and at the Royal Academy of Arts and the Society of British Artists in London, but also in Birmingham. Thors died in 1920 in Islington, United Kingdom. Today, the artist’s work is held in the collections of Shugborough Hall in Great Haywood, the Cheltenham Art Gallery and Museum, the National Trust in Sunnycroft, and the Wolverhampton Art Gallery, among others.
