This is a stunning quality antique English Victorian oak dining table, with ebonised decoration, in the Pugin gothic style, circa 1850, extending to 15ft, which seats up to 18 people, in excellent condition. The quality and design of this table leads us to believe it to be associated to the renowned cabinetmaking firm “Gillows Lancaster”, however the majority of their furniture was not stamped and this table is not stamped either. The extending dining table benefits from a solid oak top with a stunning rich oak colour, with a moulded edge, above a skirt frieze. The five leaves continue the same design, incorporating a skirt frieze, which is a true sign of quality. The oak dining table is raised on four oak legs in each corner, supported by a fifth leg to the centre of the dining table. The legs are decsigned with octagonal shaped knees, finely decorated with ebonised rings and inset domes, above ebonised fluted tapering legs, which terminates on the origin brass castor cups and porcelain wheels. The oak dining table consists of two identical “d” end halves, which are attached via the original metal barrel winding mechanism. The winding mechanism and runners are in excellent original condition, and have been constructed to a very high standard, including brass stopping plates. This mechanism can be used to wind the two halves together to create a small rectangular antique oak table, which will seat four people. By winding the mechanism out, the two ends separate to create a space into which up to five oak leaves can be inserted, to create an elongated table. With the five leaves inserted, the oak dining table measures 15ft in length and will seat up to 16 -18 people, depending on the size of chair used (see photos of chairs around table). The number of chairs will be dependent on the size (width) of chair. The original winding mechanism, is operated by use of a crank, which inserts into a hole at one end of the antique dining table and turns a central crankshaft that runs under the table top.
The dining table boasts a stunning golden oak colour; having been cleaned and French polished by hand in our workshop, along with the years of care and cleaning it has received. This antique dining table would look superb in a variety of rooms, specifically the dining room or boardroom. This truly is a very beautiful oak dining table with quality construction and is original throughout. This item would certainly grace any home, as it is a fantastic investment. So, don’t miss out on your chance to own a lovely piece of furniture.
The design of this Victorian dining table was influenced by the popular Pugin movement, during the mid-19th century. Augustus Pugin was an English architect, designer, artist and critic who is principally remembered for his pioneering role in the Gothic Revival style of architecture. His work culminated in designing the interior of the Palace of Westminster in Westminster, London, England, and its iconic clock tower, later renamed the Elizabeth Tower, which houses the bell known as Big Ben. Pugin designed many churches in England, and some in Ireland and Australia. He also created Alton Castle in Alton, Staffordshire (source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Augustus_Pugin)
