Description:
This a fine quality antique English Victorian walnut etagere / display stand, decorated with a gilt gallery and marquetry inlaid panels, comprising three tiers with a lockable drawer, circa 1870, in good condition. The style and design of this stand is typical of the Aesthetic period, during the late Victorian era.

The top incorporates a brown veined leather skiver; the perimeter is decorated with an elegant brass fretwork gallery, with circular protruding corners. A single working drawer sits below the top section; retaining its original brass key escutcheon, working brass lever lock and original key. The drawer is constructed from chestnut linings, with fine quality hand-dovetail joints. The drawer front is decorated in a walnut border, with boxwood string inlay and a bird’s eye maple central panel. The frieze of the top section is decorated with a brass rope moulding, which is replicated on the two lower shelves below.

Both of the lower shelves are decorated with a walnut border, boxwood string inlay and a bird’s eye maple central panel incorporating stunning marquetry work, featuring a variety of woods, such as boxwood, holly and olive wood. The Victorian walnut etagere stands on its original ebonized columns and terminates on brass collars. This aesthetic display stand retains its original patination; therefore, it boasts a stunning colour, which cannot be replicated without the passage of time.

A whatnot is a piece of furniture derived from the French étagère, which was exceedingly popular in England in the first three-quarters of the 19th century. It usually consists of slender uprights or pillars, supporting a series of shelves for holding and displaying china, ornaments, trifles, or what not, hence the elusive name!

This Victorian walnut etagere is an excellent investment but also very practical for storage and would look superb in a variety of rooms from the hallway, dining or living room. It would fit in either a traditional setting, or mixed in a contemporary setting. So don’t miss out your chance to own a lovely piece of furniture.

The Aesthetic Movement
Aestheticism (also the Aesthetic movement) was an art movement in the late 19th century which privileged the aesthetic value of literature, music and the arts over their socio-political functions. According to Aestheticism, art should be produced to be beautiful, rather than to serve a moral, allegorical, or other didactic purpose, a sentiment exemplified by the slogan “art for art’s sake.” Aestheticism originated in 1860s England with a radical group of artists and designers, including William Morris and Dante Gabriel Rossetti. It flourished in the 1870s and 1880s, gaining prominence and the support of notable writers such as Walter Pater and Oscar Wilde. Aestheticism challenged the values of mainstream Victorian culture, as many Victorians believed that literature and art fulfilled important ethical roles. Writing in The Guardian, Fiona McCarthy states that “the aesthetic movement stood in stark and sometimes shocking contrast to the crass materialism of Britain in the 19th century.” Aestheticism was named by the critic Walter Hamilton in The Aesthetic Movement in England in 1882. By the 1890s, decadence, a term with origins in common with aestheticism, was in use across Europe. (Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aestheticism)
