Description:
This is a fine quality antique Victorian Arts & Crafts chair, in the manner of Morris & Co., circa 1890, having been newly re-upholstered, in excellent original condition. Ideal for use as an occasional chair around the home or office desk chair. This Arts & Crafts chair is constructed from top-quality solid mahogany. The armchair boasts an arched shaped top rail, decorated with a satinwood shell motif and satinwood string inlay. The top rail is secured by a bank of finely shaped vertical slats uniting the top rail to the seat frame underneath – this not only looks stunning, but provides structural support to the chair frame as a whole. The arms terminate on shaped inlaid supports, above a serpentine shaped seat frame, with tapering block front legs, terminating on spade feet and sweeping splayed legs to the rear. The seat has been newly upholstered to a professional standard in green velvet. If you do not like the upholstery, we can re-cover the seat in a fabric of your choice.
The underside of the seat has been covered with traditional hessian in the traditional manner. The Arts & Crafts chair seat is firm but extremely comfortable to sit on.

The chair frame has been cleaned and French polished, by hand, to a professional standard in our workshop. Therefore, the mahogany frame boasts a stunning colour and patination, along with the years of care and cleaning it has received.

This Arts & Crafts chair would look superb in the living room or bedroom as on occasional chair, or useful as an office desk chair. This item would certainly grace any home and is a great investment as it is extremely functional as a desk or office chair. So, don’t miss out on your chance to own a lovely piece of furniture.

The Arts & Crafts Movement:
The Arts and Crafts movement was an international trend in the decorative and fine arts that developed earliest and most fully in the British Isles and subsequently spread across the British Empire and to the rest of Europe and America. Initiated in reaction against the perceived impoverishment of the decorative arts and the conditions in which they were produced, the movement flourished in Europe and North America between about 1880 and 1920. It is the root of the Modern Style, the British expression of what later came to be called the Art Nouveau movement, which it strongly influenced. History Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Co.
Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Co. (1861–1875) was a furnishings and decorative arts manufacturer and retailer founded by the artist and designer William Morris with friends from the Pre-Raphaelites. With its successor Morris & Co. (1875–1940) the firm’s medieval-inspired aesthetic and respect for hand-craftsmanship and traditional textile arts had a profound influence on the decoration of churches and houses into the early 20th century. Although its most influential period was during the flourishing of the Arts and Crafts Movement in the 1880s and 1890s, Morris & Co. remained in operation in a limited fashion from World War I until its closure in 1940. The firm’s designs are still sold today under licences given to Sanderson & Sons, part of the Walker Greenbank wallpaper and fabrics business (which owns the “Morris & Co.” brand and to Liberty of London).
