Description:
This is a superb quality antique English Victorian solid mahogany extendable oval dining table, circa 1860, which seats up to eight persons, and extends up to 7ft 5” long, in excellent original condition. Constructed from top quality mahogany, the Victorian dining table boasts a solid mahogany top with a stunning original colour, above a moulded frieze. The Victorian oval dining table retains its two original leaves; which can be fitted by pulling out the telescopic extending mechanism – the mechanism is in excellent original condition. The length extends from 4ft 7⅛” to 7ft 5⅛” and can seat up to 8 persons. The dining table can therefore be used as both a circular or oval dining table. The Victorian oval dining table is also 4ft 7¼” wide, allowing for plenty of space to fit serving plates in centre of the table.

The wooden telescopic mechanism was an earlier design for adjusting the lengths of dining tables, later superseded by steel threaded winding bar and winding handle. One benefit of this earlier mechanism, is that it does not feature the steel mechanism, thus less parts, which means there is less to fail, when operating the mechanism. The Victorian oval dining table is opened by two persons pulling each “D” end apart. The table can be closed by two persons pushing the table together.

The telescopic mechanism allows the ends to either be brought completely together or extended to accept all three additional ‘drop-in’ leaves for extending the table. The ‘drop-in’ leaves connect to the ‘D ends’ and to each other via brass connecting locks situated on the underside. The Victorian oval dining table can be configured in a multitude of different ways: the two ‘D ends’ can be brought together to form a circular centre table, which will seat four people. The ‘drop-in’ leaves are each a different size (small and large); therefore, they allow for many different combinations to achieve slightly different lengths, to best suit the intended number of users. This ability to be configured in so many different ways allow the table to be utilised in the best way possible according to room size and intended use. The ‘D-ends’ & leaves retain their built-in brass connecting locks (to the underside of the leaves), which are used to connect the various leaves together.

The Victorian oval dining table is raised on an elegant turned central pedestal, supported by four substantial cabriole scroll legs, decorated with fine applied carvings, resting on is original bras castors.

The Victorian oval dining table boasts it original polish and patination. It has fantastic mellow colour and patination, which is due to the years of care and cleaning it has received.

This truly is a very beautiful Victorian mahogany oval dining table with quality construction and is original throughout, that would be expected from the Victorian period. This mahogany dining table would certainly grace any home, as it is a fantastic investment. So, don’t miss out on your chance to own a lovely piece of furniture.
