Description:
This is a fine quality antique English Victorian landscape oil painting of a view of Windsor Castle, by Thomas Whittle the Younger, circa 1880, in its original gilt frame, in good original condition. Thomas Whittle the Younger (1842-1915) was a well renowned Royal Academy artist, who was trained by his father (Thomas Whittle Senior) during the late Victorian period and flourished between 1868 – 1885. He also painted “Fallen Beauties” (1866) and “The Road to the Valley” (1867).

This Victorian oil painting is a study of Windsor Castle viewed from the opposite bank (most likely the North West elevation), with the river Thames meandering in the foreground. The flag is flying high on the castle turret, which indicates that Queen Victoria was in residence at the time. The landscape painting depicts fishermen punting on the river, cattle grazing with their herder nearby and two people chatting to a man on a donkey with their dog. The oil painting was probably painted mid-day or early afternoon, revealing autumnal colours. In most of his pictures the clouds were similar. It’s a peaceful and nostalgic scene of a bygone era and it’s a study one would not tire of viewing. The Windsor Castle, by Thomas Whittle the Younger has the skill to draw you in with its range of rustic colour hues and texture depicting the quintessential English country scene, possibly painted in late summer.

The Victorian oil picture is framed in its original ornate gilt frame, which is in good original condition. The frame is inscribed “T. Whittle” and the painting is also signed “T. Whittle” in the bottom left-hand corner.

The Windsor Castle, by Thomas Whittle the Younger would look superb in a variety of rooms, including the hallway, living room or bedroom. This item would certainly grace any home and is a great investment as it is an attractive and colourful piece. So don’t miss out on your chance to own a lovely picture.

Artist Biography:
Thomas Whittle the Younger (1842-1915) was born at Foots Cray, Kent in 1842, the son of the artist Thomas Whittle the Elder (1803-1887), a still life and landscape painter. The family later lived in Newington and Greenwich before settling in Croydon. It is highly likely he was taught by his father as his style and subject matter share similarities. From 1865, Whittle started exhibiting works at the major London and provincial galleries including the Royal Society of Artists, Birmingham, Royal Society of British Artists, Royal Institute of Oil Painters and Suffolk Street and the Royal Hibernian Academy. He also exhibited works at the Royal Academy including ‘The Moonlight Hour’ and ‘The Palmy Days of Spring’.

Sometime after 1871, Thomas married Elizabeth who was 9 years his senior and together they lived at Excelsior Villa, 30 Upper Coombe Street, Croydon, Surrey. Whittle’s style of painting is similar to that of the Birmingham and Norwich School, taking great inspiration from the great British countryside. By 1911 he had begun to decline in health and died in Dartford in 1915.
