Description:
This is a superb quality antique English William IV double scroll end mahogany and brown leather couch, which has been newly upholstered to a professional standard in full grain chestnut brown leather, circa 1835, in excellent condition. At this time, England was importing the best quality mahogany from its colonies. The frame and bolster reeded legs are constructed of solid mahogany. The frame features attractive up-right scroll end arms, which are decorated with floral detail and scribe mouldings. The couch features a straight top rail to the back, above a deep buttoned backrest, with the arms also being deep buttoned. Additionally, moulded cartouches can be seen at the top of the reeded legs. The couch stands on elegant ring turned reeded legs to the front, terminating on the solid brass brown porcelain castors on all four legs, which are in good condition. The couch has been newly upholstered in top quality full grain chestnut brown leather incorporating the original horsehair. The couch includes a removable swab seat and two ruched bolster cushions. The swab seat incorporates a zipped cushion back, filled with horse hair and lined with Dacron and felt for comfort. The leather frame is studded in traditional metal studs, in keeping with the original design. The couch features a newly webbed base, the original detachable swab cushion and two bolster cushions at each end. The mahogany frame has also been cleaned and French polished, by hand, to a professional standard, therefore the colour and patination is of an excellent standard. The couch seats 3 – 4 persons.
