Description:
This a fine quality antique English transitional William IV / early Victorian mahogany whatnot, comprising three tiers with a drawer, circa 1830 – 1840, in excellent original condition. The style and design of this piece transcends from the William IV to the early Victorian period. Decorated with melon carved finials above the top shelf, the display sand is supported by finely shaped fluted columns, with a second shelf below and a drawer. The working drawer is decorated with a moulded front and retains its original matching melon carved knobs. The drawer is mahogany lined and finely constructed with hand-dovetail joints. Further down a third and the lowest shelf is also supported by fluted columns. Each of the shelves are finished with a fine moulded edge. The mahogany whatnot stands on its original bulbous melon carved feet, which terminate on brass socket castors. The mahogany display stand retains its original colour and patination, therefore it boasts a stunning colour, which cannot be replicated without the passage of time.

A what-not is a piece of furniture derived from the French étagère, which was exceedingly popular in England in the first three-quarters of the 19th century. It usually consists of slender uprights or pillars, supporting a series of shelves for holding and displaying china, ornaments, trifles, or what not, hence the elusive name!

This mahogany whatnot is an excellent investment but also very practical for storage and would look superb in a variety of rooms from the hallway, dining or living room. It would fit in either a traditional setting, or mixed in a more modern decorative setting. So don’t miss out your chance to own a lovely piece of furniture.
