Object Description

Antique Feraghan Long Rug, c. 1890s
3.00 x 1.58 m

Early Feraghan carpets were popular during the 19th century, woven the same region as the equally popular and much sought-after Ziegler Mahal carpets.  These carpets are often seen in grand houses in Europe and the UK, known for their quiet formality, soft wool and harmonious colours. Feraghan carpets are especially unique in that they balance both tribal and traditional elements of rug design beautifully.

An exquisite early Feraghan with high-quality wool and a high density of knots, hence the clarity of its crisp drawing. The muted blue field is a great backdrop to the harmonious variety of vegetable-dyed colours in the design, including sky-blue, green, terracotta and ivory, well framed by over eight individual borders.

This Feraghan long carpet is in very good practical condition. It has retained all of its eight decorative borders on all sides, a remarkable feature for a rug dating c.1890.

A timeless work of art to complement a tasteful setting.
