Object Description
This large mantel clock is an excellent piece of refined Neoclassical design by the acclaimed Deniere et Fils firm. Deniere was one of the leading practitioners of luxury bronzeware in Paris in the mid-19th Century, and received commissions from important noblemen across France, including the Emperor Napoleon III.
The clock features two full length patinated bronze figures of Classical style women on its gilt bronze plinth, finely-detailed with careful attention to the drapery on their clothing. In between the figures, the clock dial is shown in a gilt bronze case, on a gilt bronze pedestal which features fluting and scrolling foliate frieze decorations. The square stepped gilt bronze plinth also features frieze decorations, showing wave motifs on all sides.
The enamel clock dial is signed ‘Deniere / A Paris’, and the movement is stamped similarly. This large clock is a fine luxury piece, made for a large mantel.
