Object Description
Antique French Empire style glass and gilt bronze chandelier
French, Late 19th Century
Height 32, diameter 42cm
This French 19th century chandelier is crafted in the Empire style. The style was popular during Napoleon I’s reign and is characterised by the use of many gilded elements and symmetrical designs, all features which can be noticed in this piece from Mayfair Gallery’s collection.
The gilt bronze frame of the lighting fixture is cast with a laurel leaf motif. From it hangs a collection of shimmering glass bead chains. Most are hanging horizontally but some are draped vertically adding a delicate design feature to the piece. The shining gold of the gilt bronze superbly complements the clear glass beads. The chandelier terminates with an ormolu finial.
This stunning antique chandelier would be a magnificent addition to the appropriate interior space.
