Mounted on an architectural plinth, this striking patinated bronze by F. A. Gadaix embodies the late 19th-century resurgence of Greco-Roman influence in European decorative arts. Created circa 1900, the work demonstrates the period’s deep admiration for antiquity, interpreted through accomplished academic technique.
The composition draws inspiration from the celebrated 18th-century La Frileuse (Winter) by Jean-Antoine Houdon, depicting a shivering young woman as an allegory of Winter. In this version, the figure stands in a reserved, reflective pose, lightly wrapped in finely modelled drapery that both conceals and reveals the form beneath. The balanced proportions, subtle movement, and softly inclined head evoke the grace and restraint associated with classical statuary and Neoclassical refinement.
The bronze is finished with a nuanced patina of warm brown hues enriched by delicate traces of green oxidation, adding depth and definition to the surface. The sculpture is signed “Gadaix” at the base.
It is set upon its original cylindrical pedestal of green-glazed majolica, adorned with a moulded relief frieze of dancing classical figures, creating a harmonious and visually cohesive ensemble.
