Émile Müller Stoneware

This antique terracotta plaque is stamped to the back with the Parisian makers mark of the Émile Müller & Co. stoneware factory. Beginning as a manufacturer of roofing tiles, Émile Müller (1823-1889) established the ‘The Grande Tuilerie’ in Ivry, Paris on the banks of the Seine River in 1854. In 1866, the factory diversified, producing enamelled bricks which proved a sensation at the 1889 Universal Exhibition, Émile Müller becoming the centre of Art Nouveau stoneware production in France. Later that year, Émile Müller died and his son Louis (1855-1921) succeeded him as head of the company, renaming it ‘Émile Müller & Co’.
