Object Description
Antique Italian marble sculpture after Roman original of the Wrestlers
Italian, late 19th Century
Height 94cm, width 124cm, depth 68cm
This fine sculpture is carved from a single piece is lustrous white marble. The sculpture depicts the classical ‘The Wrestlers’, a now-lost Greek original known to us today through a Roman reproduction. The Roman version of the sculpture is currently housed in the Uffizi in Florence, where the sculptor of the present piece, Eugenio Battiglia, likely copied it from observation. The piece depicts two young and idealised men engaged in the ancient Greek sport of wrestling. It is signed to the base ‘Prof. E. Battiglia / Florence’.
