Object Description

Fantastic colours on this circa 1890-1900 antique Karaja rug from northern Persia.  The border is a rich madder red with an abundance of greens and pale blue flowers and leaf design.  The two eight-pointed star design motifs in the main field are either side of a natural ivory wool latch-hook medallion, in beautiful condition with original ends and sides.  Professionally washed by ourselves and ready for the floor, supplied with our sturdy rug underlay.

Karaja carpets and rugs were woven in a village in the northeast of the Heriz region of Persia, not far from the Azerbaijan Border.  The rugs often use 8 pointed star motifs and sometimes they weave in animals and people which adds great interest. They are easily recognisable with three repeating medallions similar to those in caucasian rugs. The central motif has the latch-hooked design and the other two are eight-pointed stars.  This large carpet has more of a Heriz design and early Serapi colours mixing all three designs in many ways.
