Object Description
Antique Kazak Long Rug, c. 1890
2.40 x 0.80 m
Antique Kazak rugs, woven in the Southern Caucasus, are among the most highly prized, and best-known, tribal weavings, famed for the diversity of their designs, bold palettes, and the high density of knots in their weaves, lending their drawings crisp clarity, well suited to their expressive, geometric designs.
This remarkable early piece is a wonderful example, with a soft ivory ground providing the perfect backdrop for its wide palette of soft greens, terracotta reds, and denim blues. The composition has a real sense of playful creativity, characteristic of the most desirable Kazak rugs of the period, with five individual medallions repeated across its centre, each in different colours, featuring a unique design, and all framed by a tasteful border; a bold layout, especially relative to this carpets narrow format.
A charming piece, in very good condition for everyday use, with a tribal naivety that would add personality and warmth to any setting.
