Object Description

Antique Kazak Rug, c. 1890-1910
2.06 x 1.20 m

Antique Kazak rugs, woven in the Southern Caucasus, are among the most highly prized tribal weavings, famed for the diveristy of their designs, bold palettes, and the high density of knots in their weaves, lending a crisp clarity to the geometric patterns in their drawing.

This early piece, dating to c. 1890-1910, is a stunning example of its type, featuring a warm terracotta field, overlayed with three diamond shapes running across its centre, and hooked geometric forms, with ivory and ochre accents – a remarkably open, balanced layout for a rug of this category and size. Perhaps this rug’s most distinct, and most attractive, feature is its border, which the artist has woven with a beautiful abrash (ie. the subtle variations in tone), ranging from shades of pale sky blue to rich turquoise hues, and decorated with an irregular medallion pattern, repeated in a wide range of colours, giving the work a real sense of charming naivety.

A rare find, and a wonderful work of design, this piece is preserved in very good condition for everyday use, and would make a characterful addition to any setting.
