Object Description

Antique Kirman Carpet, c. 1900s
3.64 x 2.47 m

With regard to their quality and artistry, Kirman carpets represent the pinnacle of all Persian workshop pieces. The workshops of Kirman, well known for the high standard of their craftmanship, won the royal patronage of the Safavid court in the 17th Century, and became some of the earliest Oriental carpets to make their way into the Western market, and are often spotted in historic houses across Europe and the UK. They remain highly sought after by collectors and designers alike today, thanks to the combination of their faithfulness to the techniques and patterns of the Classical Era, and the creativity of their designs.

This fine antique example, dating to c. 1900, employs a delicate all-over design – as opposed to the conventional central medallion composition – which lends the work a rare feeling of space and balance, well complimented by the wide border and tastefully restrained use of colour in its design. Its vegetable-dyed tones include ivory, muted terracotta, camel and duck egg blue, and its creative design characteristics are drawn from earlier Classical carpets of the 17th Century.

Retained in very good condition for everyday use, its organic dyes have taken on a fine patina with age, adding to this carpet’s sense of understated grace.

An elegant workshop weaving, which would lend itself to a wide variety of interior styles.
