Object Description

Antique Kirman Carpet, c. 1890-1910
3.24 x 2.72 metres

With regard to quality and artistry, Kirman carpets represent the pinnacle of all Persian workshop pieces. The workshops of Kirman, well known for the high standard of their craftmanship, won the royal patronage of the Safavid court in the 17th Century, and became some of the earliest Oriental carpets to make their way into the Western market, and are often spotted in historic houses across Europe and the UK. They remain highly sought after by collectors and designers alike today, thanks to the combination of their faithfulness to the techniques and patterns of the Classical Era, and the creativity of their designs.

This fine antique piece features an unusual all-over pattern, as opposed to the more conventional central medallion, which lends the work a rare sense of space and balance, added to by the uniformity of the muted chocolate brown colour across the wide border and the central field. The rest of the palette, all in gracefully aged vegetable dyes, includes tones of olive green, ivory, and faded pinks, with charming bands of sky-blue abrash (or, colour gradient) in the drawing.

In well-preserved condition for everyday use, with minimal age-related patina.

A beautiful example, rare in this square format, to suit a wide variety of settings.
