Plaque: Height 22cm, width 29cm
This vibrantly painted Limoges enamel plaque depicts Christ carrying the cross to his crucifixion, when he stumbled on the road to Calvary. In this depiction, Christ is shown on the ground in agony, with the cross resting heavily on his back. Simon of Cyrene, the man compelled by the Romans to carry the cross of Christ, is shown lifting the cross momentarily and looking with scorn at the guards.
The plaque is set within a velvet-mounted pierced giltwood frame.
