Object Description

Antique Louis XIV-style ormolu chandelier by Barbedienne
French, Late 19th Century
Height 100cm, diameter 75cm

This superb chandelier is crafted by Ferdinand Barbedienne, one of the finest metalworkers of the 19th century. The chandelier features twelve lights in two tiers, which each sit atop an ornate bobeche. The light fixtures sit at the end of S-scroll branches that are decorated with acanthus leaf motifs, and the waisted stem features similar foliate patterning. From the base of each arm hangs a rounded finial, which is decorated with circular patterns. Both the shape and decoration of the piece are reminiscent of the chandeliers of the Louis XIV period.

The chandelier is signed ‘F. BARBEDIENNE’. Working in France in the latter half of the 19th century, Barbedienne’s bronze creations were known for their innovative design and excellent craftsmanship, leading him to win the Grande Médaille d’Honneur in Paris in 1855.

With its exquisite design, this shining ormolu chandelier highlights why Barbedienne is renowned for works of the highest quality.
