Object Description
An extremely attractive antique Mahal carpet dating from 1890-1900, in lovely original condition, with a rare soft palette of dyes. The all over muted lattice design is used in the main field of this antique carpet, with delicate small leaves and flowers. A soft muted red is used for the main border, with a flowing 16th century pattern known as the Herati design.
The background colour is a rare soft grey with purple hues, as there is a variety of dyes which were used to create this colour over 100 years ago. A very decorative carpet in brilliant condition, we can see some creases on the image unfortunately, but once the carpet is laid flat and supplied with underlay these shall all smooth out. Woven in Sultanabad, Persia, where the famous antique Ziegler carpets reside from, these pretty Mahal carpets used similar soft wool and excellent natural dyes to create carpets for the Western market.
