Object Description
Antique marble and gilt bronze centrepiece attributed to Edward F. Caldwell & Co.
American, Early 20th Century
Height 31cm, width 75cm, depth 30cm
Attributed to Edward F. Caldwell & Co, this Neoclassical style centrepiece is crafted from marble and gilt bronze. The American firm was founded in 1895 and is renowned for the design and manufacture of electric lighting fixtures and decorative metalwork.
The upper part of the piece is carved from white marble. The boat-like bowl is carved inside with a leafy pattern, while one side of it is mounted with an elaborate ormolu mount. Four sweet gilt bronze cherubs are depicted lifting and supporting the marble bowl. Some are lifting it with their hands while others are resting it on their back. The execution of the gilt bronze features is superb with fine details such as fingers superbly done. The cherubs are joined by a ribbon-tied garland which leads to two central mounts.
The piece stands on a shaped marble base, its design fitting with the bowl.
Showcasing fine early 20th century American design, this elegant centrepiece is a desirable addition to one’s collection.
