Plaque: Height 24cm, width 31cm, depth 0.5cm
This beautiful and rather large Meissen porcelain plaque is painted with a scene after Correggio, the famed Renaissance painter. The plaque depicts Mary Magdalene, as she lies in a blue robe on a bed, a book open in her hand and her upper torso immodestly revealed. The painterly manner is smooth and fluid, with delicate, precise brushstrokes predominating, while the colour palette is dark and sombre. The plaque, which is marked to the reverse for Meissen, is contained within a beautifully ornate giltwood frame.
