Object Description
A superb unusual Mesopotamia / Iraqi silver and niello handle walking cane, circa 1890 in date.
The striking stick features the monogram PER to the top and a seashore scene with sailboat, palm trees, sheep, camel and ruins around the sides on a gently tapering ebonised shaft with it’s original ferrule.
The old name for the region of Iraq was Mesopotamia, a Greek term meaning “Land Between the Rivers”. This historical region corresponds to the location of modern Iraq and is recognized as the “cradle of civilization” due to the ancient civilizations that arose there, such as Sumer, Akkad, Babylon, and Assyria
