Designed by the distinguished bronzier Henri Picard, the piece showcases the luxurious materials and artistic finesse that defined the period.
Picard, a celebrated artisan active in Paris during the mid-1800s, earned acclaim for his exceptional work in gilt bronze. His workshop, known for producing high-quality decorative objects, was entrusted with commissions for the imperial household of Napoleon III and contributed to the embellishment of prestigious institutions such as the Louvre. His creations continue to be prized by collectors for their elegance and historical significance.
This particular centrepiece is a masterful composition of gilded metal and intricately cut glass. The ornate base features two golden cherubs positioned symmetrically around a central palm motif, all supported by bun feet adorned with laurel wreath detailing. Above, a hobnail-patterned glass bowl, ideal for presenting fruits or confections, is crowned by a tall, fluted vase with a scalloped rim, perfect for floral arrangements. The underside of the central support is stamped with ‘H. Picard’.
