Object Description

Antique Neoclassical style gilt bronze mantel clock
French, early 19th century
Height 47cm, width 34cm, depth 15cm

This fine Neoclassical style mantel clock is from the early 19th Century. The clock is cast in gilt bronze, and features the surmounting figure of Asteria seated with the figure of an eagle, who is Zeus transformed. The story is taken from Greek mythology, when Zeus took the form of an eagle to pursue Asteria, who later turns into a quail to escape. The figures are surrounded by an urn and a potted plant, and sit atop the central circular clock dial, which features a white face with black hands and Roman numerals. The clock dial is set into an upper rectangular plinth, and flanked to the lower left and right with classical faces in roundels, and directly below with a wreath of foliage. This rectangular plinth is set onto a bigger rectangular plinth, which features a recessed frieze of arrows and wings in relief, all set on four toupie feet.
