Object Description
Antique ormolu and mounted mahogany stand with onyx top
French, Late 19th Century
Height 89cm, width 36cm, depth 36cm
Crafted in the Neoclassical style, and taking inspiration from various French royal styles, this tall, distinctive, and delicate stand exhibits exceptional attention to detail and artistic skill, with a view to creating a truly fine piece. The square top is made of green onyx, galleried with ormolu, and it is placed atop a frieze which is mounted with Bacchic putti blowing horns, on all four sides. Musical trophies fill the friezes, and paterae decorate the corners on each face. In turn, this is placed upon tapering legs, which are lined with ormolu down their edges, and which feature gilt ribbons and wreaths. The legs are joined by a stretcher which ends with a flame finial, and they are mounted upon capped toupie feet.
