Object Description
A good pair of antique elm and beech ‘captains’ Windsor armchairs in original condition.
These type of chairs were very popular at the turn of the century being very sturdy, hard wearing and comfortable to sit in.
They were used in many environments such as offices, function rooms and kitchens and produced in great numbers. However, it is difficult to find a pair of these ‘captains’ chairs in such good condition.
The ‘horseshoe’ shaped backs have a raised central rest and are supported by a series of boldly turned blaster spindles.
The saddle seats are carved from a single piece of solid elm and the chairs stand on 4 baluster turned legs, linked by stretchers.
This pair have developed a pleasing honey coloured patina and have the knocks and bumps associated with their age and regular use. One seat has an ink stain which is shown in the photos. They have been professionally cleaned and wax polished and would lock good as a pair of desk chairs or kitchen chairs.
