Object Description
A superb fine quality pair of highly decorative Florentine giltwood framed Intaglios of Jesus Christ and the Archangel Gabriel in ebonized boxed-glazed frames, dating from Circa 1870.
The large rectangular intaglios feature Jesus with the crucifix with the German inscription:
IESUS TRAEGT SEIN KREUZ KIT GEDULD
Translates as
JESUS CARRIES HIS CROSS WITH PATIENCE
And the Archangel Gabriel and an eagle with the inscription:
DA GERIETH ICH AMTAGE DESHERRN
IN EINE ENTZUCKUNG UND NOERTE HINTER MIREINE STIMME
GLEIGH DEMPOSAUNEN SCHALLE
Translates as
THEN I FELL INTO A RAPTURE ON THE DAY OF THE LORD
AND HEAR A VOICE BEHIND ME
LIKE THE BLOW OF A TRUMPET
Each gilded Florentine frame featuring heavily scrolled foliate and acanthus detail the central framed with a stepped and beaded leaf border all cased in ebonised & glazed frame with crimson red and dark purple velvet ground.
The gilding is original and they are certain to make a charming addition to that one special room in your home.
