Object Description

This is a beautiful pair of antique gilt framed architectural view oil on board paintings by Lewis J Wood (British 1813 -1901), signed and inscribed on labels verso, dating from the early 19th Century.

The paintings depict The Old Church of St Etienne and Cathedral Abbeville on the Grande Rue, both signed and inscribed on labels verso “Lewis J Wood. 19 Hemingford Villas Barnbury Park”.

The artist has used a very delicate palette of colours and has succeeded in adding some mystery to the scene. The paintings are housed in their original and beautiful giltwood frames.

Born in London, Lewis John Wood was a landscape and architectural painter in both oil and watercolour, and a lithographer. He exhibited from 1831, and from 1836 mainly painted scenes of northern France and Belgium. His early work was much influenced by the work of Thomas Shotter Boys.
