Object Description
This is a beautiful antique pair of oil on canvas paintings, one showing the view of the Grand Canal in Venice and the other the view of The Dogana, by the renowned British artist Alfred Pollentine (1836-1890). Each is signed to canvas lower right, “A Pollentine” and further signed and inscribed “The Dogana” & “The Grand Canal” verso.
This beautiful pair of paintings capture striking views of the Grand Canal and both feature busy streets and canal scenes with sailing boats and gondoliers in the foreground, in the distance the facades of Saint Mark’s, the Doge’s Palace, Santa Maria della Salute and the spiralling tower of the San Marco Campanile complete this wonderful pair.
Each housed in it’s original and beautiful gilt and glazed gallery frame.

Alfred Pollentine
is best known as an accomplished painter of Venetian scenes, although he also did paint some English coastal views. Many of his paintings were done in an impressionistic style.
Pollentine exhibited numerous works at several of the top galleries in England from 1861 through 1880, including two of London’s most prestigious ones, the British Institution and Society of British Artists.
R. J. Pollentine and W. H. Pollentine are also recorded artists and are believed to be his father and brother.
