Object Description

A very good quality and rare antique Regency bowfront commode chest in the Egyptian style of Thomas Hope. The well figured timbers of this commode are found throughout and they are beautiful rich mahogany colour.

The chest is of a break front and bowed outline with a reeded edge to the top. It is fitted with three oak lined drawers with the original locks and brass knob handles. These are flanked by ebonized pilasters under Gilded and ebonised Egyptian sphinx busts.

The chest stands on nicely shaped bracket feet.

Object Literature

The Egyptian revival followed on from the Napoleonic Expedition to Egypt around 1798, which was both military and more importantly archeological, bringing the Egyptian culture and treasures to Europe. Nelson’s victory of the Nile at this time also inspired the fashion and fascination for all thing Egyptian. In the early 1800’s Thomas Hope was the leading exponent of the Egyptian style in furniture but by the early 1800’s but by about 1830 the style has faded from use.
