These chairs can be firmly attributed to Gillows of Lancaster and London on the basis they bear the retailers stamp from ” J Winter, 101 Wardour Street, Soho ” who is widely documented as a retailer of items manufactured by the Gillows workshop. They also bear an extremely close resemblance to a set of chairs sold at Christies Hackwood House sale which are known to have been manufactured by Gillows.
James Winter & Sons traded from 1823 to 1870 at two different locations on Wardour Street, Soho, London. Furniture bearing their stamp is always of the highest quality and they are regarded as an important name among 19th Century English furniture makers and retailers.
