Antique Rococo Style Giltwood Trumeau Mirror with Still Life Panel

This refined antique trumeau mirror dates to the late 18th and early 19th century and is centred around an 18th-century oil on canvas still life attributed to a follower of Jakob Bogdani (English, 1658–1724). The painting is set within a finely carved George II style giltwood frame, incorporating three shaped mirror plates in the lower section.
The upper panel depicts a richly composed still life of exotic bird, fruit and flowers, executed in the highly decorative and theatrical manner associated with Bogdani’s circle. A parakeet is shown resting among peaches, grapes, figs and pomegranate, surrounded by an abundant display of roses, peonies and seasonal blooms. The strong contrast between the deep, atmospheric background and the vivid natural elements enhances both depth and drama, while the detailed rendering of the bird’s feathers reflects the refined naturalism typical of this school.
The giltwood frame is elaborately carved in the George II taste, decorated with scrolling acanthus leaves, C-scroll ornament and finely modelled floral motifs. It is topped by an impressive pierced foliate crest, which adds height, movement and a strong architectural presence to the overall design. The carving is deeply cut and expressive, characteristic of high-quality English Rococo-inspired craftsmanship.
Beneath the painted section, three shaped mirror plates are set into the lower part of the frame, intended to reflect light and enrich both the artwork and its surrounding space. The glass shows a soft, timeworn surface consistent with late Georgian manufacture, contributing to the mirror’s atmospheric character.
The combination of painting, carved giltwood and mirrored surfaces is typical of elegant Georgian interior design, where trumeau mirrors of this type were used as statement pieces above chimneypieces in principal rooms.
Overall, this example stands out for its strong decorative presence, the richness of its carving, and the harmonious integration of all its elements into a unified and highly decorative composition.
