Object Description
This extremely fine Russian icon shows the image of Christ Pantocrator, which translates roughly as ‘Christ the Almighty’. It’s one of the most important images of Christ within Orthodox Christianity, and shows Christ holding the New Testament in his left hand, and making a gesture of teaching or blessing with his right. The icon is set within a silver gilt and cloisonne enamel ‘oklad’, or protective covering. Christ’s robes and Bible are shown in silver gilt, and his halo is shown in cloisonne enamel decorated with geometric floral patterns. There is a foliate silver border inside the frame, which is made from carved wood.
