Object Description

1712 Band Sampler by Elizabeth Axton. Framed in an old wood frame with gilt slip and glass. Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard backing. The sampler is worked in fine wool on linen ground, in a variety of stitches including Algerian eye. No border, divider lines in various patterns. Colours red, cream, black, pink, blues and greens. Alphabets A-Z in upper case and lower case and numbers 1-5. Inscription reads ‘RememBeR Thy Creator in the days> of Thy Youth Anne ComBeRBeaTch’ and ‘Love The LoRD and he will be a tenDer> fAther unto thee’. Signed and dated ‘ELIZABETH ?XTOn RC IE. ThIs sempler WAS Finished The 21 of July 1712’. Consists of a variety of elaborately worked floral and foliate bands.

Object Condition

Generally Good. One hole and some old tack holes to the extreme edges. No stains other than uniform age darkening of the ground. Some stitch losses to the divider lines, floral and foliate bands, letters, numbers and signature. Colours are mostly good and strong with no noticeable fading. No colour run. Stretching is slightly uneven. Frame in good condition, ready to hang.
