Object Description

1741 Band Sampler by Elizabeth Buckingam. Framed in an old wood frame with gilt slip and glass. Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard backing. The sampler is worked in silk and linen ground, in a variety of stitches including Algerian eye. Decorated border and divider lines in various patterns. Colours gold, green, light brown, dark brown, purple, copper and blues. Alphabets A-Z in upper case and numbers 1-30 Verses read’AWAKE MY SOVL AND WITH THE> SUN THY DAILY STAGE OF DUTY R>VN SHAKE OF DUL SLOTH AND JOY>FUL RISE TO PAY THY MORNING SA>CRAFICES’ and ‘Teach me O Lord that way of life> thy statutes Recommend Never>from thence will decline But>keep it to the end’ and ‘ELIZABETH BVCKINGAM IS MY>NAME AND WITH MY NEEDLE I ROVGHT THE SAME AND IF I COULD>HAVE DONE IT BETTER I WOVLD>HAVE MENDED EVERY LETTER’.
