Object Description

Antique Sampler, 1746, by Mary Knight. Framed in an old wood frame with rippled, old glass. Mounted over linen with wood and paper backing. The sampler is worked in a silk-like thread on linen ground, in cross stitch throughout. Elaborate diamonds border. Colours red, gold, blues and greens. Inscription entitled ‘Exodus Chapye xx’ reads ‘1> Have thou no other gods but me> 2> Before no idol bow thy knee> 3> Take not the name of God in vain> 4> Do not ye sabbath day profane> 5> Give both thy Parents honour due> 6> Take heed that thou no murder do> 7> Abstain from words and deeds> 8> unclean. Nor steal tho thou> art Poor and mean> 9> Make not A wilful lye nor love it> 01> What is thy neighbours dare> not covet’. Signed and dated ‘Mary Knight in ye eleventh year of her age: 1746’. A couple of crown motifs.

Object Condition

Generally Good. A number of holes. One stain speck. No stitch losses other than to the holed areas. One stray piece of thread. Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading. No colour run. Stretching is slightly uneven. Frame showing slight wear, otherwise sound.
