Object Description
Antique Sampler, 1777 by Phebe Hotham Aged 10. The sampler is worked in wool and silk threads on a linen ground, mainly in cross stitch. Meandering strawberry border. Colours blue, green, silver, black and pink. An inscription at the top reads, ‘Be thou faithful unto Death and I Will give the A Crown of Life’. The main verse is the Lords Prayer in French, which reads ‘Notre Pe-re, qui-es aux> Cieux ton Nom soit-> san-cti-fi-e Ton Regne> vi-en-ne Ta Vo-lon-te> soit fai-te en la Ter-re> com-me au Ciel Don-> ne nous au-jour-dhui> notre Pain qua-ti-di-> en Par-don-ne-nous> nos Of-fen-ses com-> me nous par-don-nons> a ceux qui nous ont> of-fense Et ne nous in> dui Point en Tentati> on mais nous deliv-re du mal Car a toi e-> st le Re-gne & la Pu> is-sance & la Gloire> aux Sie le de Siecles Ainsi soitil.’ Signed and dated, ‘Phebe Hotham her Samplar in the year of our Lord 1777 Aged ten’. A good set of motifs, including a large central stag in a pictorial scene, surrounded by a lion, dogs, trees and a fruit basket. Other motifs include birds, angels, crowns, hearts and a pair of female figures. Framed in an old, possibly original, wood frame with Tru Vue conservation glass. Mounting: The sampler is fixed to board. Frame backed with brown paper and sealed with tape.. Dimensions exclude the frame and slip.
