Antique Sampler, 1786, by Elizabeth Ross. Biblical Scene

Object Description

1786 Sampler by Elizabeth Ross. Framed in an old wood frame with gilt slip and glass. Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard backing. The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches. Meandering strawberry border. Colours greens, cream, yellow, light brown, white, red and blues. Verse entitled, ‘Chrift and Mary Magdalene’ reads, ‘Jefus faith unto her, Touch me not for I am not yet afcended to my Fa->ther’. Signed and dated ‘Elizabeth Rofs finifh’d this Piece of Work Anno Domini 1786’. Wonderfully detailed country scene to the centre, depicting Christ and Mary Magdalene with sheep

Object Condition

Generally good. A number of holes. A few dark stain specks and slight uniform age darkening of the backing linen. No stitch losses. Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading. The silks bright and glossy. No colour run. Stretching is very slightly uneven. Frame in very good condition, ready to hang
