Object Description
1792 S:Axfords School Sampler by Mary Williams. Framed in an old wood frame with gilt slip and glass. Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard backing. The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches. Meandering floral border. Colours black, cream, red, light brown, gold, pink, blues and greens. Alphabets A-Z in upper case and numbers 1-13. Inscription reads ‘LEARNING WILL STAND YOUR FRIEND WHEN RICHES FAIL.’ Verse titled ‘A HYMN’ reads ‘1> NO more my God. I boaft no more> Of all the duties I have done.> I quit the hopes I held before,> TO truft the merits of thy fon,> 2> Now for the love I bear his name,> What was my gain I count my lofs,> My former pride I call my fhame,> And nail my Glory to his Crofs,> 3> Yes, and I muft and will efteem> All Things but loft for JESUS, Sake,> O may my foul be found in him,> And of his righteoufnefs partake,> 4> The beft obedience of my hands,> Dares not appear before thy Throne,> But Faith can anfwer thy demands,> By pleading what my Lord has done.’ Signed and dated ‘Mary Williams her Work Done at S:Axfords School in the 9 year of her age 1792 May the 1’.
