Object Description
1793 ‘Long Live the King and Queen’ Commemorative Sampler by Elizabeth Holden. Framed in an old, gilt frame with glass. Stitched to linen with chipboard backing. The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches. Meandering strawberry border. Colours red, cream, green, pale blue, copper, white, pink, brown and gold. Verse reads ‘Long may the King Great Britions Scepter fway>While all his Subjects peaceably obey>And when Gods Providence fhall him remove> From thefe below to higheft Realms above>To his own Race may he the Crown refign>Forever to continue in that Line’. Inscription reads ‘Long Live the King and Queen 1793’. Signed and dated ‘Elisabeth Holden Her Work 1793’. The sampler is possibly commemorative of the war against revolutionary and Napoleonic France. A good set of motifs, some finely embroidered, including angels, flowers, fir trees, fruit baskets butterflies and lions.
