Object Description
1796 Hair & Silkwork Sampler by Charlotte White. Framed in an old maple frame with gilt slip and glass. Fixed to linen with wood and chipboard backing. The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches. Meandering floral border. Colours browns, cream, green, pale blue, black, pink, copper and gold. Signed and dated ‘Charloote White Her Work january the 12 1796’. A wonderful set of motifs, some finely embroidered, including Adam & Eve standing either side of the tree of life with a snake coiled around its trunk, an angel (all of which have their hair sewn with real hair), the sun, birds, butterflies and flowers.
