Object Description

Georgian Sampler, 1801, by Sarah Banes. The sampler is worked in silk threads on a linen ground, mainly in cross stitch. A finely worked meandering floral border surrounds outside. Colours green, brown, silver, blue and pink. Verse reads, ‘Let nothing base thy Name Defile, Or tempt thee to an Act that’s vile. But be sincere upright and true, At home at school and else where too. And thou rewarded well shall be, For thy Just Deeds thy Probity. Thou shalt have Blessings stile in store, To crown thy virtue more and more. For Blessings ever wait on virtuous Deeds; And tho a late- a sure Reward succeeds.’. Signed and dated, ‘Sarah Banes Aged 12 1801’. Framed in an old wood frame with glass. Mounting: The sampler is fixed to board. Frame backed with chipboard and sealed with tape.. Dimensions exclude the frame and slip.

Object Condition

Generally Good. A few well masked holes. Patchy stain in top right corner and along the top edge. No stitch losses. Colours are mostly good and strong. Pink colour appears to be later refreshed/enhanced. No colour run. Neatly and evenly stretched. Frame showing some wear, but is structurally sound and in our opinion could be hung ‘as is’.
