Antique Sampler, 1803 Silkwork Sampler flowers

Object Description

1803 Floral Sampler. Framed in an old, gilded, gesso frame with rippled, dimpled, old glass. Loose mounted over card with wood and paper backing. The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches. Meandering strawberry border and divider lines in various patterns. Colours pale blue, cream, red, pale green, copper, gold and black. Alphabets A-Z in upper case and lower case and numbers 1-22. Verse and signature unreadable. Dated ‘January 10 1803’. A good set of motifs, including flowers, crowns and fleurs de lis.

Object Condition

Generally Good. A few small holes and losses to the bottom edge. No stains other than slight uniform age darkening of the ground. Stitch losses to the verse, signature and floral motifs. Pencil markings slightly visible where stitcher outlined original motif design. Colours are slightly faded, but still well defined. No colour run. Stretching is very slightly uneven. Frame showing slight wear, otherwise sound.
