Object Description

1805 sampler by Frances Spriggs. The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches. Meandering strawberry border. Colours black, yellow, green, copper, white, brown and pink. Verses read, ‘Jesus permit thy gracious name to Stand< As the first effect of an Enfants hand< And while her fingers on the canvas move< Ingage her tender thoughts to seek thy love< And with thy dear children let her have a part< And write thy name thy self upon her heart'. And, 'No minutes surely bring more content< Than those in pleasing useful studies spent'. Signed and dated, 'Frances Spriggs her work June the 1 1805'. A wonderful set of motifs, some finely detailed, including a house with a garden, birds, potted flowering plants, stags, fruit baskets, fir trees, sheep and dogs. Framed in an old wood frame with gilt slip and glass. Stitched to linen.

Object Condition

Good. A few small holes. Some stitch losses to the verse. Colours are slightly faded, but still well defined. No colour run. Neatly and evenly stretched. Frame in good condition, ready to hang.
