Object Description

1809 Sampler by Ann Shaw. Framed in an old, gilt over wood frame (repainted) with rippled, dimpled, old glass. Tacked to a wood stretcher frame. The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches. Meandering strawberry border. Colours pink, cream, blue, green, copper, silver, gold and black. Alphabets A-Z in upper case and lower case and numbers 1-19 Verse reads, ‘Make much of every Moment of your Time>If you aspire in art to be sublime>No minutes surely bring us more Content>Then those in useful Studies spent>Content is a continual Store>And he’s unwise that asks for more>Dare to be just your Fame regard>For Virtue is its own Reward’. Signed and dated, ‘Ann 1809 Shaw’. A wonderful set of motifs, including a flower basket and floral garlands, crowns and fruit baskets

Object Condition

Good. A few small holes. A few patchy stains. No stitch losses. Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading. No colour run. Stretching over the frame is a little uneven at the top and bottom. Frame with age related wear and tear, but in our opinion, ready to hang.
