Object Description
1815 House Sampler by Mary Jubb. Framed in an old black, ebonised wood frame with rippled, old glass. Fixed to card and chipboard backing. The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches. Rolling waves border. Colours greens, white, black, gold and pink. Verse reads’In all misfortunes this advantage lies>They make us humble and they make us wise>Lets bear it calmly tho a grievous woe>And still adore the hand that gives the blow>And he that can acquire such virtue gains>An ample recompense for all his pains’. Signed and dated ‘Mary Jubb 1815’. A wonderful set of motifs, some finely embroidered, including a house with a garden, dogs, birds, potted flowering plants, fruit baskets, fir trees, crowns, a cow and butterflies
